WHAT MAKES HAND-KNITTED GARMENTS SO LUXURIOUS?

WHAT MAKES HAND-KNITTED GARMENTS SO LUXURIOUS? - TWELVE YARNS

Fast fashion moves fast. Slow fashion moves with intention. In the world of natural-fibre knitwear, the choice of material, the skill of the creator, and the care of the wearer all matter deeply.

Fast fashion vs. slow fashion: What's the difference?

Fast fashion is designed to be replaced. It's made quickly, from synthetic fibres, at the lowest possible cost and it shows. Pilling after a few washes, losing its shape, ending up in landfill within a season or two.

Slow fashion is the opposite. It's made to be kept. Pieces are designed with longevity in mind, crafted from materials that improve with age, and priced to reflect the true cost of quality, which is always less than the cost of replacing something cheap twice a year.

Why natural fibres?

Synthetic fibres like acrylic, polyester, nylon are essentially plastic. They shed microplastics with every wash, they don't breathe, and they don't age gracefully. Natural fibres behave differently in almost every way:

  • Mohair is warm, lustrous, incredibly durable, and naturally odour-resistant. A good mohair piece can last decades.
  • Wool regulates temperature, wicks moisture, and is naturally fire-resistant. It's been keeping humans warm for thousands of years for good reason.
  • Linen and cotton breathe beautifully and soften with every wash, becoming more comfortable over time.

These fibres don't just feel better. They perform better, last longer, and when their life is finally over, they return to the earth without leaving a trace.

The South African mohair story

South Africa is the world's largest producer of mohair, accounting for over 50% of global supply. The Eastern Cape's climate, warm summers and cool winters is ideal for Angora goats, producing fleece with exceptional lustre and fineness.

At Twelve Yarns, our mohair is sourced from this region. When you buy one of our Mohair knits you're not just buying a garment, you're buying into a supply chain that supports South African farming families and the skilled artisans who turn that fleece into something beautiful.

The skill of the creator

Slow fashion knitwear isn't just about the raw material. It's about what's done with it. Hand-knitted and hand-finished pieces carry the knowledge and time of an experienced maker in every stitch. That's knowledge you can see and feel in the tension of the knit, the finish of a seam, the weight and drape of a completed garment. At Twelve Yarns we hand-knit every piece ourselves, so you know the hands that create your garments.

Buy less, buy better

The slow fashion argument ultimately comes down to this: buy fewer things, but buy things that last. A mohair coat that you wear for fifteen years, that you might one day pass on is infinitely more sustainable than five cheaper coats that fall apart. It's also more satisfying to wear.

That's the Twelve Yarns philosophy. We make pieces that earn their place in your wardrobe and stay there.
